Safety & informed participation
Balance the question being asked with risk and the person's willingness to participate.
01Before testing
- Confirm identity, purpose, symptom distribution, consent and ability to participate.
- Review anticoagulants/antiplatelets, bleeding history, implanted devices, infection and relevant surgery.
02Individual decisions
- Do not independently stop anticoagulants. The clinical team must balance bleeding and thrombotic risks.
- Deep, chest-wall and diaphragm sampling requires appropriate training and risk assessment, with ultrasound when indicated.
03During and after testing
- Explain steps and adapt necessary sampling to symptoms and tolerance.
- Provide appropriate aftercare. New respiratory symptoms after chest-wall sampling require immediate assessment.
Pause and explain
Explain in your own words: “Use enough testing to answer the question without purposeless stimulation or sampling.” Then think of a situation in which it could be misinterpreted.
